Pappas Technologies and Texas AWOS Service Install New Mesotech System at Brooks County Airport

Falfurrias, Texas (February 17, 2022) – The Brooks County Airport (KBKS) in Falfurrias, Texas commissioned an Airport Weather Advisor® Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS) on February 17, 2022. Airport Weather Advisor® is the flagship product of Mesotech International, Inc, a Sacramento, California based manufacturer of meteorological instrumentation systems. The AWOS supports aviation safety by providing up to the minute weather reports to pilots via radio, telephone, and the internet.

The AWOS installation at Brooks County Airport was completed by Pappas Technologies Inc. and Texas AWOS Service, who will be maintaining the system for the airport. Weather data is currently being reported to the national Aviation Weather Center and the National Weather Service from the system and can be found online under airport ID KBKS.

Located along Texas’ Tropical Trail Region in the deep south, the area was first settled in 1881 by Don Pedrito Jaramillo. Jaramillo was known throughout Texas as the “Healer of Los Olmos” because he healed himself and his followers with natural infusions from the land. The town was later founded by Edward Cunningham Lasater, a pioneer Rio Grande Valley rancher and developer. Lasater always said that the town’s name of Falfurrias came from the Lipan Apache language meaning “land of heart’s delight”. The area is home to the largest herd of Jersey cattle anywhere in the world and the Falfurrias Creamery, famous for their butter, the only creamery still churning butter in Texas.

The Brooks Country Airport covers 169 acres and has 2 asphalt runways: one measuring 3071x60 feet and one 6002x 75 feet. With Falfurrias bordering between a hot, semiarid climate and a humid subtropical climate, the new Mesotech AWOS system will support the existing general aviation operations at the airport and provide crucial weather data during times when hurricanes threaten the regions. Airport Weather Advisor® help the airport safely grow and manage future operations, expanding the economic development of the region for years to come.
