Halls Crossing, Utah – Mesotech International, Inc. announces the successful installation and commissioning of an Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS) at Cal Black Memorial Airport (U96) in Halls Crossing, Utah. The new system provides real-time weather data, enhancing safety and operational efficiency for pilots and airport personnel. The project was completed in collaboration with Lyle Northern Electric, which handled civil works construction, and Woolpert, the project’s engineering consultant.
Advancing Safety at Cal Black Memorial Airport
Located in southeastern Utah near Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Cal Black Memorial Airport plays an important role in supporting general aviation and access to the region’s outdoor recreation. The newly installed AWOS delivers critical weather information, including wind, visibility, temperature, dew point, barometric pressure, and lightning detection ensuring pilots have the data they need for informed decision-making.
This system supports compliance with FAA standards for automated weather reporting, allowing the airport to accommodate Instrument Flight Rule (IFR) operations and providing a safer, more efficient flying environment.
Economic and Regional Impact
According to the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT), Cal Black Memorial Airport contributes approximately $1.2 million annually to the local economy. The new AWOS enhances the airport’s ability to serve the region’s aviation needs while supporting its ongoing development as a critical transportation hub.
The AWOS will deliver high-quality surface observation data to the Federal Aviation Administration, National Weather Service, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, enhancing meteorological forecasts, climate analysis, and decision-making for both aviation and public use.
Cloud-Based Support with AWOS Live
The AWOS is supported by Mesotech’s cloud-based AWOS Live application, enabling remote system monitoring and real-time access to weather data on any internet-connected device. Pilots, airport operators, and local stakeholders can view live conditions at KU96.AWOS.LIVE, ensuring widespread access to accurate and timely information.
